چکیده

We study the performance of a spiking network model based on Integrate-andFire neurons when performing a benchmark discrimination task. The task consists of determining the direction of moving dots in a noisy context. By varying the synaptic parameters of the Integrate-and-Fire neurons, we illustrate the counter-intuitive importance of the second order statistics (input noise) in improving the discrimination accuracy of the model. Surprisingly we found that measuring the Firing Rate (FR) of a population of neurons considerably enhances the discrimination accuracy as well, in comparison with the firing rate of a single neuron.

Objective: The present study examined oscillatory brain activity of the EEG gamma band and event-related potentials (ERPs) with relation to the difficulty of a visual discrimination task. Methods: Three tasks with identical stimulus material were performed by 9 healthy subjects. The tasks comprised a passive control task, and an easy and a hard visual discrimination task, requiring discriminati...

The effects of dopamine D(1) receptor blockade in the prelimbic-infralimbic areas on behavioral flexibility.

This study examined the effects of a dopamine D(1) antagonist, SCH23390, infused into the prelimbic-infralimbic areas on the acquisition of a response and visual-cue discrimination task, as well as a shift from a response to a visual-cue discrimination and vice versa. Each test was carried out in a cross-maze. The response discrimination required learning to always turn in the same direction (r...

Neuronavigated transcranial magnetic stimulation suggests that area V2 is necessary for visual awareness.

The primary visual cortex (V1) has been shown to be critical for visual awareness, but the importance of other low-level visual areas has remained unclear. To clarify the role of human cortical area V2 in visual awareness, we applied transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over V2 while participants were carrying out a visual discrimination task and rating their subjective awareness. Individual...

Role of the dorsomedial striatum in behavioral flexibility for response and visual cue discrimination learning.

These experiments examined the effects of dorsomedial striatal inactivation on the acquisition of a response and visual cue discrimination task, as well as a shift from a response to a visual cue discrimination, and vice versa. In Experiment 1, rats were tested on the response discrimination task followed by the visual cue discrimination task. In Experiment 2, the testing order was reversed. In...

Perturbation of Posterior Inferior Temporal Cortical Activity Impairs Coarse Orientation Discrimination.

It is reasonable to assume that the discrimination of simple visual stimuli depends on the activity of early visual cortical neurons, because simple visual features are supposedly coded in these areas whereas more complex features are coded in late visual areas. Recently, we showed that training monkeys in a coarse orientation discrimination task modified the response properties of single neuro...
